Similar to the Four Pillars of Destiny Chinese astrology, Zi Wei Dou Shu or 'Purple Emperor astrology' is extremely useful and provides great insight and understanding into a person's energy or qi. As with the Four Pillars of Destiny, Zi Wei Dou Shu uses the Heavenly Stems and Chinese zodiac animals, or as they are known professionally, the 'Earthly Branches'. However, calculating and reading a chart is very different. Firstly, Zi Wei Dou Shu uses the lunar calendar, so a birth date must always be converted. The origins of Zi Wei Dou Shu system are unclear, but the first person to actually document the system was Chen Xiyi during the Northern Song dynasty (960 to 1127). During this time, charts were drawn in the form of a circle, similar to the Luo Pan or Chinese compass that current Feng Shui practitioners use, but reading a circular chart is impractical, so during the Ming dynasty (1368 to 1644) Luo Hongxian devised the rectangular charts we use today.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, gifted astrologers and astronomers were employed to work at the Bureau of Astronomy in the Imperial Court. The astrologers observed the stars and noticed that one seemed to be stationary and the other stars revolved around it. As it was also the brightest, the Chinese courtiers named it the “Emperor Star”. That star we know today as Polaris or the North Star. Court astrologers were shown great respect and drew up astrological charts to determine the Emperor's fate, his successor, and by extension, his kingdom. During this time, Zi Wei was a closely guarded secret and rulers banned its practice outside the court. Even today, Zi Wei Dou Shu is not well known or widely practised and in fact, the art of Zi Wei lies in the ability to fully understand the subtle effects of the stars, depending upon their relationship with each other and where they are in the chart.

Zi Wei Dou Shu is more popular as it is a method that is seemingly easier to pick up, but to master it is perhaps just as, if not, more difficult than BaZi. The location of his 'Emperor star' and 'Deputy star' is in the 'Brothers palace'. The Emperor denotes a person's major direction in life. The deputy is an able assistant and means working very closely with someone that appears as a brother, hence the legendary union between Lennon and MacCartney.

To the left is the 'Life palace' containing the Intellect, Intelligence and Angel 1 stars. Its significance is one of teaching and educating people through communication, the result of which was the profound lyrics contained within his music about the way life ought to be. Had his Emperor star been in this palace, he could have achieved it on his own.

The stars to the right of the Emperor in the Marriage palace are Wedding, Fiery and Mercy. The wedding star appearing in the marriage palace meant that he would marry at least twice, whilst the Fiery star, although unlucky in nature, together with the Mercy star made him determined to find his soulmate the second time around. Opposite his Emperor is the Friends palace with his Flirting star, which made him extremely popular, particularly with females and perhaps accounts for the initial hysteria that greeted his earlier public appearances.

The most striking part of John Lennon's chart is that although he brought love and joy to millions, his own Happiness palace is empty. This palace is opposite his Wealth palace and connected to Travel and Marriage palaces. These influences governed his life between the year 1965 and 1974, the result of which was that he realised that wealth does not bring happiness. He got married, with no great success, but also traveled to India to see his guru who taught him that happiness would come from the joy and education of others. This was a major turning point in John's life and upon his return to the UK, he split with the Beatles and started his solo career producing such legendary classics as 'Imagine' and 'Give peace a chance'. He also married Yoko Ono during this period.

His next life period was 1975 - 1984, under the influence of the Property palace and the Wicked star, the Health and Brothers palaces with its Calamity star and his Emperor stars. At the time of his death, these stars were activated by yearly and monthly influences, the result of which was that he was tragically assassinated outside his New York home.

Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology) is a form of fortune-telling in Chinese culture. It remains one of the most well-respected^[1] processes for laying out 'The Destiny Path' or 'Fate'.

Terminology[edit]

• Zi Wei (紫薇) - purple Rosa multiflora(薔薇), also known as Baby Rose, Rambler Rose. In the astrological world, this majestic color is related to spiritual aspiration. 微 is used for 薇 in ancient/simplifed Chinese writing. Noble rose referred to the North Star, the most prominent star in the sky.
• Dou (斗) - 北斗星Big Dipper constellation, North Star, Pole star. A prominent star that is approximately aligned with the Earth's axis of rotation. It is used as the coordinate to chart the sky.
• Shu (数) - calculation.

In ancient times, Zi Wei Dou Shu was restricted to the exclusive and private consultation of the Imperial Emperors only as Zi Wei Dou Shu could provide an elaborate reading too detailed and classified. Thus, imperial astronomers used Zi Wei Dou Shu to delineate charts for the Emperor as the Emperor's destiny is bridged to and affects the destiny of his kingdom and dynasty. Among the stars used in the Zi Wei Dou Shu system, there is one main star while other stars revolve around it. The star is named the “Emperor Star” – Purple Star (紫微) which also represents the ruler (Emperor) of the kingdom. Zi Wei Dou Shu has been used by professional consultants and practitioners for the past 1000 years to determine one's destiny and as remedial Feng Shui strategies. Zi Wei Dou Shu has its unique feng shui philosophies and principles and is known as the “personalized feng shui”.

Zi Wei Dou Shu was created by a Taoist named Lu Chun Yang (呂純陽) during the Tang Dynasty. It was further developed by Chen Xi Yi (陳希夷) during the Song Dynasty and later on by Luo Hong Xian (羅洪先) during the Ming Dynasty to its present-day form.^[2] Its exact origin, however, is still debated among the different schools, and should not be taken as a guaranteed historical context.

Chinese Astrology has always been closely intertwined with Astronomy. Gifted astronomers and astrologers were recruited as officials to work in Imperial Courts during the dynastic eras. In those days most astrological charts were crafted solely for the emperor, as his personal fate had a direct bearing on his kingdom. The court astrologers also played an important role in determining the successor to the throne.

Astrologers observed the stars and noticed that among so many stars, only one was seemingly stationary while the rest revolved around it. This star was named the 'Emperor Star' (紫微星)--the celestial equivalent of the Emperor and known in the West as Polaris.

Chinese Society[edit]

As with all other forms of fortune-telling, the Chinese do not generally see astrology as an infallible guide as to what will happen, but more as a form of forecasting in detail. Destiny and fortune are structurally complex and are unlikely to be changed by a single element. An overly simplistic application of - for example - changing one's lucky colors and numbers is not expected to affect or change one's destiny in any significant way. Knowledge about events to come may allow one to gauge the situation and make decisions from a position of strength. Zi Wei Dou Shu approaches the world and events from the idea that to view things in their proper context, it is important to recognise the 'spiritual dynamic of the universe' to find the pattern of change that leads to 'fundamental truth'.

There are two lineages in Zi Wei Dou Shu. There is the San He lineage, and the Si Hua lineage. The Si Hua lineage is not commonly available to learn, and there are not many practitioners worldwide. However, there is currently an app book written in English exclusively for the Si Hua lineage. The Si Hua Flying technique is a powerful system in decoding the exact timing and causes of events.^[3]

1. Ziwei (The Emperor, or The Purple Star): associated with Yin Earth, the leader - organizator, the senior, the monarch, stable development, benevolence, neutrality, wisdom, obligations, human society, power,　position, material wealth, the capacity of healing and rescuing.
2. Tianji (The Advisor, Heavenly Machine　or Heavenly Secret): associated with Yin Wood, the assistant, the strategist, the clerk, siblings, intelligence, strategy, manipulation, goodness.
3. Taiyang (The Sun): associated with Yang Fire, the leader of men, the senior, the male (father-husband-son), the mass, mass development, masculine characteristics, directness, vision, self-sacrifice, universal love, ideal, nature, power, fame, the capacity of giving.
4. Wuqu (The Finance Minister or the Military Bureaucrat, Martial Tune): associated with Yin Metal, the assistant, the short term planner, the merchant, the worker, the lonely, craftiness, inner strength, caution, rigidity, decisiveness, wealth, industry.
5. Tianfu (The Empress or the Viceroy, Heavenly Mansion): associated with Yang Earth, the senior, the monarch or high official, background leadership, stability, benevolence, conservativeness, human society, material wealth, position, power, the capacity of consolidating.
6. Tiantong (The Lucky Star, Pleasure Seeker, Child): associated with Yang Water, the junior, mercuriality, natural kindness, pleasure, laziness, good fortune
7. Lianzhen (The Judge, Young Female): associated with Yin Fire, the virgin, the judge, the lawyer, the witch, the courtesan, strictness, chastity, wickedness, double-facedness, prison, harem, justice, abominable accidents, punishment, love, humour, poverty
